Hopworks – 3 horns up

It’s only possible to fill up here for $10 during happy hour, which is from 3-6pm and 9-11pm (10-midnight on friday and saturday). Split a house salad, which is suprisingly big and full of all kinds of dark greens including fresh spinach. Get two slices of pizza, either cheese or the veggie special of the day (or meat if you’re a carnivore). The veggie pizza slice is different each day and sometimes weird and rad (like potato or artichoke hearts) and sometimes just weird (like feta cheese and carmelized onion…really?). If you only get one slice, you still have enough in the budget to get your choice of cajun thick-cut fries or three insanely huge pretzels with homemade pilsner mustard. Now that’s a full feast for $10. The only downside is when there’s no happy hour, you won’t really be able to eat cheap here.

Sweetness Bakery – 4 horns up

This is a diamond in the rough. The hardest material ever, which can cut right through whatever you have, unless it’s also made of diamond. How’s that for metal? This places makes a freakin’ mean breakfast, but it will likely cost more than $10 unless you make creative use of the sides. Order oatmeal with your choice of two toppings (such as fresh apples and toasted pecans), a side of 2 eggs scrambled with ricotta and cheddar, house-roasted spiced potatoes, and two amazing homemade muffins of your choice…all for $10. I cannot stress how mind-blowingly brutally majestic their pastries are. Also, the homemade bread they use for sandwiches is otherworldly in its awesomeness.
